2.3 Quantity Theory of Money in the Early Twentieth Century The classical (e.g. Adam Smith, David Hume, David Ricardo, and John Stuart Mill) and the neoclassical schools (e.g. Alfred Marshall, A. C. Pigou, Irving Fisher ) state that inflation is a monetary phenomena (Snowdon and Vane, 2005). According to Classicists, volume of money determines the price level in the economy that operates with full employment and relative prices are determined by demand for and supply of real goods. These economists developed the monetary theory which can be taken as the analytical approach to explain the economic role of money. In course of explaining the economic role of money Irving Fisher, the classical economist formulated the equation of exchange associated with the quantity theory of money. Booth and Carroll, 20 05).Therefore, a lot is needed to be done in the field of indigenous healthcare(Anderson et al., 2002). In this essay, I am going to discuss various problems faced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island people and will try to devise a potential health strategy that would overcome these problems. There are many different health systems across the world with different approaches, but they have one similar goal i.e. to improve the health of the society they are serving. I think the most important and basic principles that every health system follows are the quality of their services, accessibility and the sustainability of that system. To design an effective health system there are a few questions that should be answered: why is a change required? What are the needs of the population and how will they evolve? What would be the most suitable pathways to achieve good health? What models are needed to support optimal care? And are these changes feasible and affordable?(Dash, Llewellyn and Richardson, 2009). There is a great need for a changein the field of indigenous healthcare. According to the data of the year 2012-2013 given by Australian Bureau of Statistics, the rate of long-term diseases in the aboriginal people was higher than that in the non-indigenous people(ABS, 2015). This can be attributed to various factors such as language, lack of transport and telecommunication services, lack of interpersonal relationships between the healthcare providers and the aboriginal patients(Dick, 2007),(Copeman, 2010). Therefore, I am proposing a health strategy/system which could possibly improve the health of aboriginal people. This health system would have healthcare personnel from the Aboriginal community because I believe it would be more helpful to have a healthcare staff from the indigenous population so that they can better understand their needs and their cultural beliefs(Houston and Legge, 2010). Different awareness programs would be started which would educate the people regarding the healthy practices and basic hygiene etiquettes. A different emergency helpline number would be issued for the indigenous people who do not have easy access to the healthcare services. Transport facilities would be improved and they would be linked with the emergency helpline numbers so that the people living in remote areas can get medical help on time(Bailie and Wayte, 2006). There are many Aboriginal community-controlled health services i.e. ACCHSs which help in establishing an efficient communication between the government, departments and the organizations within the non-indigenous and indigenous communities(Marmot, 2011). Collaboration with such ACCHSs would ensure the well-being of the indigenous communities. Many socioeconomic reforms such as improved infrastructure, better communication and transport services need to be brought into the aboriginal community. (AIHW, 2016) Another challenge while dealing with the aboriginal patients is the cultural safety. Cultural safety is defined as an environment where an individual enjoys spiritual, social, emotional, and physical safety(Molloy and Grootjans, 2014). An individuals identity is not challenged, assaulted, or denied in a culturally safe environment(McLennan and Khavarpour, 2004). I think that the beliefs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people vary from those of the healthcare providers. Aboriginals focus on issuing respect and developing an interpersonal bonding between them and the healthcare provider(Hunt, Bond and Brough, 2004). On the other hand, the healthcare providers are more interested in making the people comfortable to the physical environment changes. I believe that the patients should not be asked to focus on any cultural dimension that does not belong to their own culture(Hayman and Armstrong, 2014). Instead, we should be more flexible in our thinking and attitude towards differ ent cultures(Walter, 2016). The people who do not possess a good command over the same language that we speak should be treated with patience. We should try to understand their concerns(Smye and Browne, 2002). Some of the key points to create a culturally safe environment are that one should reflect ones own culture, beliefs and attitude. I think establishing trust with the patient helps to achieve a more comfortable environment. One should recognize and avoid the stereotypical barriers that cause hindrance in providing quality health care services(Sajiv, 2013). The health gap between indigenous and non-indigenous people is a matter of concern(Gracey, 2014). The poor health standards of the indigenous people are associated with various factors such as poverty, malnutrition, environmental contamination, poor hygiene, lack of good infrastructure etc(Davy and Lockwood, 2014). I think the above proposed health system can help in reducing this gap by considering the following factors which define ideal health care quality(Brown, 2009): Equity: ensuring quality healthcare services to all regardless of race, ethnicity or any other personal characteristics of the patient. Safety: treating the patient safely without causing any care related injuries. Timeliness: reducing waiting time and delays for the person seeking care to provide quality services on time. This can avoid severe health conditions. Efficiency: avoiding any waste of resources such as the waste of equipment, energy, and supplies. Patient-centeredness: providing care that respects the values, beliefs and preferences of the patient. Effectiveness: providing healthcare services based on the scientific knowledge so that the patient could get most benefit from the health care services(Pholi, Black and Richards, 2009). The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island people have as much right over the quality health care services as any other citizen of our country. They should be treated equally in a culturally safe environment where they do not feel reluctant in sharing their health concerns. Their values and beliefs should be honored(Nangala, 2008). Every individual of our country demands an equal right to avail good health care facilities, but the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island people are still not getting the quality care services. There are various barriers such as language, culture, lack of local transport system that restricts the Aboriginal people from availing the quality health care services. Therefore, there is a great need to overcome such barriers and steps should be taken in that direction. The non-indigenous people should be made more aware about the plight of the indigenous people so that they have a sense of responsibility towards their fellow countrymen. Not all the healthcare providers are completely aware about the protocols of the Aboriginal people and thus, I think education regarding the cultural safety is needed to be introduced at the root level in the education system. An Argument for the Use of Due Due to a lack of attention or understanding of English grammar, many Americans have, for several generations, used the adjective due as part of a prepositional phrase to introduce adverbial elements- to the disapproval of some strict grammarians. Although I prefer their prescription, for reasons of style, I must oppose their claim to correctness, on the pragmatic grounds of logic and sensibility. The most shakily grounded argument against the adverbial use is one of etiquette or style. Wilson Follett considers this use as "poor workmanship" which is "loose and lawless....rare in writers other than those who take advantage of every latitude." (Follett). H. W. Fowler also reveals a negative bias in his statement that "due to is often used by illiterates" ( Qtd. in Morris). But, as Bergen Evans said, "it is used to qualify a verb millions of times every day. And it is used in this way in very respectable places." So, if we are to devise and enforce laws of grammar based on usage by a particular social class or the preference of some who disapprove of its workmanship-who I might add are a minority-then we should sharpen our pencils, and prepare our oratories, for the battle we've begun hardly ends with this issue and is certain to be long and arduous. A second argument, best stated by Follett, that not every locution is right by virtue of its existence, appears to highlight the noble defense of language from the deterioration caused by uneducated and uncouth use. If this were the case here, I would heartily applaud Follett and Fowler for their defense. But it is not the case. For example, engraved tablets adorning the Philadelphia state house read, " Here sat the Continental Congress...except when...it sat in Baltimore, and in...Lancaster and in...York, due to the temporary occupation of Philadelphia by the British army." (Qtd. In Evans). And in 1957 Queen Elizabeth II opened her addressed of the Canadian parliment with, "Due to inability to market their grain, prairie farmers have been faced for some time with a shortage of sums..." (qtd. In Morris). The wide spread, public and formal use of due to for adverbial elements hardly qualifies it as uneducated or uncouth and actually contradicts the definition of locution. This statement was intended for rebellion regarding the rights of women, however rebellion is rebellion. Due to this stand led by Adams and other women, the females in society today are fortunate enough to have received all of the rights possible.Rebellion is not only used when citizens’ rights are needed, but as Abigail said, it is used when people â€Å"have no voice or representation. † For example, many teenagers feel like they are never listened to or that even if they were heard, their comments would be irrelevant. What happens with these kids when this occurs? Many rebel to get their point across and their voices heard. While there are many form s of rebellion among high school and early college students, such as involving oneself in alcohol or drugs, the most common type could be agreed upon as involving oneself in sexual activity.Similarly, Winston and Julia also rebelled against a government in which they did not have a say. These are the two main characters from George Orwell’s dystopic novel, 1984, in which the protagonist, Winston Smith, is watched every second of every day by their government that is also known as Big Brother. These were two of the many things that Big Brother strongly supported. Therefore, when one wanted to rebel against this government and the rules that they stood for, purity and goodness were easy targets to act upon, as did Winston and Julia.After hearing this comment, Julia responds by telling Winston that she is the epitome of what corruption to the bones is. Smith is delighted to hear this from her, understanding that this is the woman whom he will rebel with. In fact, â€Å"That was above all what he wanted to hear. Not merely the love of one person, but the animal instinct, the simple undifferentiated desire: that was the force that would tear the Party to pieces† (137). What is stated implies that Winston is not looking for a lifetime partner, rather more of just a partner in crime; someone that will join him in the rebellion.Their dia logue that was proceeding consisted of Winston telling Julia that the more partners she had been with, the more he loved her. However, the love that he uses with her, is it real love or is it more along the lines of lust; a lust for someone to just accompany his side? Throughout the novel, it is easy for the reader to understand that one of the main themes is purity, or the lack of. While it can be looked upon in more depth, it is stated clearly that the lovemaking that the characters share is not actually love, rather just an impure â€Å"political act† to rebel against the Party.For example, Orwell writes, â€Å"No emotion was pure, because everything was mixed up with fear and hatred. Their embrace had been a battle, the climax a victory. It was a blow struck against the Party. It was a political act† (138). There are many examples in this novel that clearly portray this relationship as just a simple act of rebellion, this being one palpable example. The author desc ribes their embrace as a battle, implying a battle against the government; their â€Å"climax a victory,† implying that that climax had just been what they were hoping for, a blow to the face of Big Brother.This embrace screams, â€Å"Look at us, we wanted to battle against you and we were handed the trophy just following the climax. † However, Winston might as well have also been yelling out that he had no idea who the woman was that he just had sex with since â€Å"even now he had not found out her surname or her address. However, it made no difference [to him], for it was inconceivable that they could ever meet indoors or exchange any kind of written communication† (139). With this stated, once again, it shows that Winston is not concerned about the actual uman that Julia is, rather just the sexual aspects that she is about or believes in. He is not interested enough in Julia to even bother asking for her complete name, or finding out exactly where she lives. However, Orwell tries to defend this circumstance by writing that even if Winston knew where she lived, there would be no possible way for the two to meet there, because if they were found lying together, their lives would be over. Even though there are many instances where Julia, Winston, and the narrator use the term â€Å"making love†, as seen before, it is not actually love making that the two engage in, rather just plain sex.While walking, Winston ponders: He wished that he were walking through the streets with her just as they were doing now, but openly and without fear, talking of trivialities and buying odd and ends for the household. He wished above all that they had some place where they could be alone together without feeling the obligation to make love every time they met. (152) Although there is a positive aspect to this quote as Winston states that he wishes he did not feel obligated to have sex with Julia every single time that they met, he still uses the term making love when describing his relationship between them.This incommodious obligation that Winston feels is understandable and is a good change from what he has been seeing him feel, however, if he really feels that what they share is love rather than sex, why did he not care to know her surname, her morals, or anything else about her that did not regard sexuality. While some may disagree, making love is exactly what it appears. It is love that is shared between two partners who love one another, not the pleasure of sex between practically strangers. While having sex and making love could be viewed as two very different acts, Big Brother does not stand for either.Big Brother always wants the members’ energy and focus on the government and does not want for a moment otherwise, as they believe is what happens when members involve themselves in sexual activity. For example, Julia states, â€Å"‘When you make love you’re using up energy; and afterwards you feel ha ppy and don’t give a damn for anything. They can’t bear you to feel like that. They want you to be bursting with energy all the time’† (145). What is sometimes worse than committing an act of rebellion, is the feeling deep inside when the time has come to confess to this action.Winston and Julia arrive at what they think is the home of another rebel; they soon discover that this man had it in for both of them throughout the entire novel. However, before noticing this, Winston confesses about him and Julia. He states, â€Å"We are enemies of the Party. We disbelieve in the principles of Ingsoc. We are thoughtciminals. We are also adulterers [and] I tell you this because we want to out ourselves at your mercy† (185). Winston thinks that by confessing his sins to O’Brien, a member of the thought police, he is setting himself along with Julia free.Little does he know that by committing this action, he was practically turning himself in by throwin g both of their lives at the feet of Big Brother. This example proves that Winston and Julia committed adultery, so he says, as a pure act of rebellion against Big Brother since they are â€Å"enemies of the Party. † However, while I, along with many others, believe that this relationship was solely based on rebellion, Albert Camus states, â€Å"Methods of thought which claim to give the lead to our world in the name of revolution have become, in reality, ideologies of consent and not of rebellion. This disagreement is stating that while it is thought to be rebellion committed by Smith and Julia, it is in fact an ideology of consent, thus having nothing to do with rebellion. Despite Camus point of view, by considering all of the statements that George Orwell provides, it is still more likely to be an act of rebellion over anything. While Winston and Julia actually try to keep their rebellion a secret, many teens rebel against authority for the satisfaction of being caught and being able to reflect upon the moment they were discovered. For instance, when the Columbine shooting took place, it did not occur out of the blue, nor did the two offenders attempt to not be caught.In fact, the two boys told various people about their plan, not worrying about being disciplined before the offence. According to MarketWatch, there were 150,000 American manufacturing jobs sent overseas in 2003, which brought the grand total of jobs lost to anywhere between three and four million. But in 2014, only 50,000 American jobs were sent overseas and that has given many American business analysts reason to think that American manufacturing is gaining momentum. But it isn’t just the drastic drop in outsourced manufacturing jobs that is getting Americans excited. In 2014, MarketWatch estimates that nearly 60,000 manufacturing jobs were brought back to the United States in a trend being called reshoring.
